FORT WAYNE, IN – I decided to get a little ambitious and do my first masters meet outside of Ohio. In order to secure a decent amount of meets, it appears a willingness to travel will be necessary. Weather turned out to be perfect and the drive from the greater Cleveland area was not too bad at all.
Good karma and vibes began immediately when I had the pleasant surprise to see Don Chapman there. Having an Eastern Buckeye Track Club teammate to hang out with just made the day all the better. The featured photo on the home page is him and I at the conclusion of the meet. I believe he did all of the throws with Gold or Silver in all of them.

Making a longer trip made me want to get the most out of the day, which led me to signing up for four events. The first event was discus, something I had never done. I had bought one a few weeks prior to the meet and used Youtube videos for instruction. All I could do was a simple standing ‘power throw’ which produced a best throw of 79’7″ / 24.25M. Next up was javelin, and I was able to improve my best mark for the year to 122’4″ / 37.29M. We won’t talk about my one throw that went out of sector right side and through a black chain link fence. I’m fortunate my javelin survived, but it will forever bear the marks of my blunder. The final event was shot put, my best being a 29’9 3/4″ / 9.09M throw. My goal at this point is always going to be 30 feet, and I couldn’t have been any closer. I was signed up for high jump, but wimped out. I was very good at this event in my youth, but when I actually started warming up and seeing the bar placed, I bailed!
