ROCHESTER HILLS, MI – After experiencing my first “Senior Olympics” in my home state of Ohio, I thought it might be fun to do one in a different state. I was happy to learn that Michigan allows out of state participants as it was the next closest state games venue and also was the only opportunity I could find to compete in August.

This was a very well attended meet and the competition in my M50 age group was the best that I have seen to date. I was satisfied with my javelin performance at 118’4″ / 36.08M, but did not win the event. I hope this proves to be a source of motivation to train and work harder. After the silver medal in javelin, I meandered my way to the high jump area. This event intimidates me as a masters athlete, but I was determined not to scratch like I did in Indiana at the previous meet. My timing was fortunate as it was more less an open pit by gender and they would just announce the height and you could enter whenever you wanted. I came in very low, and built confidence with each height cleared. There are no words that can capture the excitement I had after clearing 4’9″ / 1.45M. This effort was actually the highest age graded score I have gotten in any event including javelin. This surprise performance in high jump earned me another silver medal on the day.

At every competition, I am starting to see familiar faces which have now become friends. I also keep making new ones that I hope to see again. I love to hear each person’s unique story and how we are all so awesomely connected through sport. A new friend that was met today, was Barry Warmerdam. I enjoyed getting to know Barry and his wife, who had made the trip from Texas. Barry is an exceptional javelin thrower and I was pleased to email him so rather cool pictures I took, including the one above.
